Phil Anselmo Is On A Strict Regiment

By Skwerl

I’m about to prod one of my own sacred cows here, but I caught this interview with Phil Anselmo of Down / Superjoint Ritual / Pantera, and I just can’t turn a blind eye. The German interviewer starts off with a kinda amateur question: Why has Philip Anselmo changed so much? And with that, the Phil show begins. Try to guess what drugs Phil is on as he talks about the “regiment” of waking up at “9 AM in the morning” (to be clear of course), and the physical therapy for his “ass muscles” required after the back surgery he underwent in 2005.

It gets funnier every time I watch it. notice where the video edits occur; you can see that there are chunks of Phil rambling that had to be clipped out… I can only imagine what was left on the cutting room floor.

If I had to guess, I’d say he’s piss drunk, and fresh off a prescription meds buffet.
But goddamn, do I love Phil Anselmo.

Im a huge fan of anselmo and everything he does…Pantera is my all time favorite (saw’em live twice) and I saw Down in vancouver in Oct. last year.. however I cant watch these interviews, i listen to him talk for 2 min. i wanna smash my screen. I prefer to remind myself of who he is by putting one of his many cd’s on. He says hes sober but yeeeeesh- i dont know.

I keep waiting for the interviewer to introduce the new Volkswagon model.

    P.S. I only made it 6 mins 42 secs in. I suck.

  • Ryan says:

This makes me feel like I’m not dumb enough to be in a rock band.

P.S. HOLY SHIT the guy who leaked Chinese Democracy commented on my blog.

  • t.j.roe says:

    I really miss Pantera.

Like why did that psycho asshole have to kill Dimebag? Everyone says he was the nicest guy they’d ever met. I’ve heard everyone hates Phil. Dimebag could actually hold a conversation without trying to glorify himself.

Phil… you were a sideman to the best guitarist in the world. Your voice was brutal, the songs were great for a while, but Dime was the real talent. And now he is the real loss. But Phil, I have the feeling that you were already gone.

    Jerk.

  • dimebag says:

Why is this spineless loudmouth still alive? After shooting your mouth off and getting the best guitarist ever killed because of said mouth you would think asselmo would have learned to shut the fuck up by now!!!!!!

  • Junkyard says:

The best part is when that dude asks him about the positive effect of quitting drugs, and Anselmo can’t help but laugh, lol.

  • AZB says:

I couldn’t watch all of this, was pathetic. What a douche. Anselmo peaked with Trendkill. Poor fella, he looked like he really had to think hard. It was like when his eyebrows got all thundercloudy you almost expected him to say something amazing, but it just never happened. Nostalgia can be a terrible thing sometimes.

Is it possible that the cat’s just overly verbose and stupid?

  • GG says:

You guys are lame, it’s a damn interview.

  • kk says:

Oh man, I just watched some other 2008 interviews and it’s SO obvious he’s loaded, which makes me sad because he thinks he’s pulling off this ’sobriety’ image. He can’t even talk! and yes I love him, too –

Watch a 1992 interview talking about making the next album harder than “Vulgar” and he’s totally normal! He’s a regular guy just talking about music and what they write about and all that.

I can see the interviewer squinting on the side and grabbing his face waiting for Phil to end the long pauses and get a damn word out. Oh Phil, they got you on meds and you always were a drinker. Tisk Tisk.

  • Bender says:

I just saw Down live in Sydney and Melbourne (if any of you “fans” even know who they are…), and Philip was without a doubt, in the best form of his career. Ok, I had doubts about what I was going to see, but to my amazement he far surpassed any expectations I might have had… Never before had he radiated such intensity, whilst showing a complete lack of his former blown up ego that was clear during the final Pantera years. Yes his years of drug abuse are still evident in interviews, but I met the guy and had the pleasure of having a conversation with him, and any weakness that might have existed in him was gone. He was strong, mentally and physically, and in the best shape of his life. If anyone doubts this – feel free to see Down next time they’re in town.

As for the guy who so disrespectfully goes by the name of ‘dimabag’, it’s funny that your philosophy about Dime’s tragic murder is based on what you read in Metal Hammer. I’d laugh if it wasn’t so offensive. Stop masquerading as a “fan”.

Don’t suck out by getting all your info from media and trash mags like Metal Hammer. And don’t lose focus by zeroing in on a couple of quotes that were made during an ugly time. There’s almost two decades of history between Phil and Dime, not a couple of headlines on a bullshit “metal” mag.

Phil Anselmo has done a lot of good for a lot of people, myself included. His words kept a lot of people from going over the brink, and helped a lot of people get close enough to it to realize what living is. I think its ignorant for any of you to turn your back on him for doing the same thing hes always done: speak the truth as he sees it.

  • Paul Morgan says:

Man, that truly hurts me to watch that. Phil at his peak, pre-junky, was as good as it gets. Now he’s a shell of himself. A shell of the man who inspired us all. I agree with the post above, I’ll remember him for who he was when he was himself. He’s just an addict now. It’s sad. And it hurts. There will never be another Pantera. I hurst me deeply to say this, but it’s just a matter of time until he od’s.

  • AdRock says:

I must admit I find quite the double standard in the way people seem to look at Anselmo’s past & present drug abuse, compared to the utter disdain directed at Scott Weiland who’s been off heroin & opiates for 7 years. He just drinks now. Sorry, but I don’t buy the excuse that the back thing turned Phil into a drug addict, anymore than I ever believed Kurt Cobain’s “Burning Nauseous Stomach” wasn’t merely a symptom of his drug withdrawal and abuse, so naturally it would be the only cure. Addict’s always look for the easiest reason or excuse so they can condone using, in their mind. Well you’ve got a guy like Weiland going thru one personal crisis after the next and staying off heroin, but acting a little drunk now and then and a bit ADD… then you’ve got Anselmo, who’s SOOOOO obviously ABUSING his pain medication, and he’s everyone’s hero!? Even if Phil is off smack also, he’s CLEARLY abusing drugs. If he’s taking more than his recommended dose. Or mixing it with alcohol, he’s half a step away from being on smack. I don’t see how you could even compare this interview with the Weiland “Rock the Vote”, and say WEILAND MADE ANSELMO LOOK STRAIGHT!? Anselmo is babbling APE in this interview… I’d rather listen to Weiland “Ummmm ahhhh uhhhhhh welll ummm uuhhhh ahhh” for an hour than listen to this guy (Phil)babble in caveman speak for 10 minutes…

The only true form of sobriety is abstaining from ALL mind-altering substances (including alcohol). Anybody who says they are sober and is still drinking, smoking pot, or popping pain pills like candy is a punk and an idiot. Oh, and wrong.

  • Mike T says:

    what an idiot…

  • Matt says:

Just let him be. If he wants to alter his consciousness, so be it. If he doesn’t, so be it. If he wants to lie about it or be truthful about it, so be it. None of it changes the great music and memories he’s given a lot of us.

  • Ylppö says:

It hurts to watch this. And why Phil sounds like Stephen Hawking at 5:20…?

  • klaud says:

wow, you fan’s turned into mainstream pussies. stick with you’re bro’s through thick and thin. i never had to meet this man phil, who changed my life through pantera… i am fucked by painkillers right now also and until you have to walk a mile in his shoes…. fuck off. we still love you phil. be fucked up as you want to be.

  • Mike T says:

first of all phil was never one of my “bros”..his whole career with pantera he did nothing but want to be in the spotlight..u can see this in the home videos…hes way to full of himself and needs to share the spotlight with the THREE other members that created the greatest metal band of all time in my opinion…the way he treated HIS “bros” was not tha greatest either…if my lead singer was bein an ass onstage to me during a live concert id beat the hell out of him honestly…and ive done enough drugs in my day to walk in phils shoes..not that im proud…im proud i kicked that habit..and im also not being recorded and shown to the public while i am so fuked i dont know whats goin on..keep showin the world how stupid you are phil…i dedicate the song Ramble On to you..cause thats all i can hear…a bunch of meaningless ramble

  • Rod says:

If he is still on drugs or abusing pain medication, I dont iknow, but one thing is clear: Phil continues the same dope smoker SOB, hahahahaha. He is completly stoned in this interview. Well, of course is sad, his brain is in slow motion, but is better laught than cry. Am I wrong? Cheers all!!!

  • TOBIN says:

Interview was set up- of course Phils f@ckd up-when isnt he? 10 min interview makes u rant a lil. watch the last minute of it. Phils the man! Rock On Brother! nawlins stile- R.I.P DBD. now interview Lil wayne and see how he does.

  • Mike T says:

wtf u talkin about Tobin?..”of course Phils fuxed up he always is?”..so why does he try to portray that hes not?…a ten min interview makes me rant??It was ten minutes of listening to a guy talk about stuff noone cares about..hell, ten minutes of it were silence when phil was thinking to hard on what to say next, then the other ten wasnt worth listening to..

  • Lethal says:

    who gives a shit.

  • Liz says:

It pained me to watch this…. I didn’t make it very far. Leave the dude alone though, and remember him for what he once was. Living his lifestyle, drugs are pratically thrown at you. If you’re feeling down about something and you try to self medicate, it is damn near impossible to stop. I’m sure he feels terrible for the things he said about Dime, and this is his only method of coping. The only method he thinks he has. He needs help. He needs to WANT to get help. I hope he does. Love you Phil.

  • xxx says:

i love phil. leave him alone. his one of the most real guys ever and you guys just dont have the power to deal with that. he’s better than ya’ll.

  • Mike T says:

lol…oh yeah…hes so much better..dude dont know what the hell is goin on.

  • Taylor says:

It’s sad to see him like this.
Wish he all of a sudden could turn back to what he once was. Listen to Down – Stone the Crow, and look how fast he’s changed.

  • johndoe says:

This video is old…I just saw them live on this last tour and believe me Phil was on…as on as the first Pantera show he ever played for a sold out arena!

  • Foxxyfinn says:

Oh dear oh f*king dear… Poor poor Philip. I feel sooo sorry for him.*sighs* He’s like a lost litte boy. Trying to be tough but very vulnerable inside.I Hope he understands to get help but I think he’s been a drug addict for too long time so the addiction is too strong and he won’t have the guts to fight. But it’s his life..his choice…

  • VLO says:

    never mind,
    now you´re living through me…

  • Ashish says:

fuck those who r against the grt..anselmo..neway he rulz the world..n still rulin wit his Down…Hail Phil…we r with u..a grt..vocalist…Hail metal..
