Interviews: Fences
A Very Brief Conversation With Fences, a Professional Musician
Christopher Mansfield, AKA Fences is a great, though not very famous artist that played our SXSW party last year, who we’ve been keeping tabs on. Earlier today, Mansfield found himself stuck on a train for four hours, and invited some questions on Twitter.
We recognized that this is exactly the type of artist debaters have in mind when saying that “the Radiohead model” only works for the Radioheads and the Reznors of this world. The type of artist that futon pundits sketch up when saying that revenues from Spotify streams and such just aren’t enough for a musician to get by. Fences is no more well known than Mark Linkous or Vic Chesnutt were when they took their lives due in part to, as David Lowery so controversially pointed out, the challenge of making money in the music industry.
So we were compelled to ask Mansfield how it’s going for him. Is it possible to make a living playing music? This very brief exchange followed:
@ffeenncceess what are your thoughts on making a living making music?

@ffeenncceess is it possible for someone in your position to get by making music in this ecosystem? where does the money come from?
