Soundgarden Rock The Showbox

Soundgarden granted a few ultimate grunge wishes last night when they reunited for the first time in 13 years to play Seattle’s legendary Showbox venue. About 1,000 fans were on hand after word got out that a band going by the name “Nudedragons” (an anagram of Soundgarden) would be playing on Friday night, followed by a presale email blast from the band.

According to local news reports in Seattle, the available tickets sold out in less than 15 minutes.

Kicking off with their hit Spoonman and closing with a cover of the Doors’ Waiting For The Sun, the surprise performance comes just four months after singer Chris Cornell proclaimed that Soundgarden would return to action. Since the New Year’s Day announcement, the band’s inclusion in August’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago had been made public, but no additional concert dates had been set.

“That’s Kim. That’s Ben. That’s Matt,” Cornell introduced his band halfway through the band’s almost two-hour set. “And that’s Chris,” responded drummer and longtime Pearl Jam member Matt Cameron.

From the second song (Gun) and onward through Flower, Hunted Down & Big Dumb Sex, it was clear that the show wasn’t going to be an industry-party run through the hits. The band was also reportedly all smiles, entirely without tension or repressed animosity of a band reuniting for a cash grab. Word from the show was that they actually appeared to be enjoying one another’s presence.

“It’s a rehearsal, so if we fuck something up, we’re probably going to go through it again,” explained Cornell, before the band ripped into Outshined, off 1991’s Badmotorfinger. The band was reportedly in top form, tearing through early material and vocally demanding numbers such as Loud Love.

Security is said to have been on massive high alert through the show, but we have faith in our fellow SG maniacs. Stay tuned for more pics/video and other such delights as the quality material trickles in.

Unlike the Faith No More reunion, I am kinda excited about this. Please god, let them sound good and make a new album.

  • Rollo says:

Ironic that they closed with “Waiting For the Sun,” as many in the crowd were probably still waiting for them to play “Black Hole Sun”. Intentional?

  • gamejerk says:

Some video of the Twitter contest that ran yesterday for Tickets.

  • There ain’t SHIT on YouTube yet. Wow.

  • BlackGrease says:

The torrent download of the show is available…why bother with shitty cell phone videos of it…sounds great so far.

  • Klavonsky says:

I CAN’T FIND THE TORRENT. I AM NOT HAPPY. HELP ME PLEASE.

  • Deuce says:

Is Cameron still touring with PJ?

  • furiousgeorge says:

    Deuce-

Yes. They are working around PJ’s touring schedule when scheduling dates. Everybody’s playing nice. Of course, why wouldn’t they be…seeing as both bands have had a general friendship for quite awhile. -FG

  • Deuce says:

Just making sure, I traded my side stage tickets for PJ at MSG with a friend for behind the stage tickets on the basis that I’d get a birds eye view of Cameron playing

If you want to read the review from where most of this information originated you can click either of the links below.

[Ed. note: Links Removed - inferior writers on lesser sites shouldn't pick fights they can't back up with evidence - not one word was lifted for Antiquiet's story, and Travis has yet to support his claims.]

Both links lead to the same article, written by myself, and to my knowledge it was the first professional review of the Soundgarden reunion show posted online.

I’m posting these links here because it is easy for other sites to rewrite, or copy a review of a high profile show that someone else wrote in order to get page views and I would like to get recognition for my work.

Btw, anybody got a link to that torrent? I’d love to hear that boot.

  • Are you that hard up for hits that you have to attack another site’s coverage of a show you were at? It’s a bold move to take credit for someone else’s writing, spammer. The information was compiled from everything from Twitter feeds to freakout fanboi messageboard posts to my own email inbox. We give credit where it’s due. Show me a single word that’s been lifted.

  • Skwerl says:

maybe we’ll link you if you retract your accusation of plagiarism. before your article was written, as the show was happening, all of this “information” was being posted in real-time to twitter. even the quotes in johnny’s article are completely different than yours. we don’t take kindly to that sort of talk around here, as our passion is for music, not for page views. if you accuse us of hackery, we’ll come at you with swords. cheers.

  • BlackGrease says:

You expect the link to the torrent after that display of douchery? It’s on private sites…if you don’t already know about them and aren’t a member, you’re SOL.

  • [...] Also I should mention that Soundgarden is headlining Lollapalooza this year AND they played their first Seattle show in 13 years a couple days ago. Fingers crossed for a world tour! Soundgarden – “Hunted Down” [...]

  • But damn, the show’s pretty decent quality, especially considering how tight security was. Kudos to the taper, whoever he/she is.

  • tng/dharma69 says:

@Skwerl…I was listening to the boot this morning and my exact thought/concern was did he have any vocal cords left after “Beyond The Wheel” because that shit was ridiculous.

A rhetorical question, obviously, since it was only the 3rd or 4th song in the set and the show certainly went on but, Lord have mercy, that shit was ridiculous.
