Hip-Hop’s Finest Make Paid Dues 2009 Worth Remembering

Antiquiet hit the 2009 Paid Dues Festival with guns blazing this past Saturday, tearing through a marathon of the best hip-hop San Bernardino’s ever seen – featuring unforgettable performances by B-Real, Living Legends, Atmosphere & many more. Jeremy and I went down for all the hot action, catching some great live video and rockin’ interviews with B-Real, Brother Ali and more, as well as one hell of a vicious contact high. We’re busting our ass to prep the footage for you, so keep an eye out over the next few days.
The annual event is a dream come true for fans of the indie/underground/backpacker scene, featuring appearances by hip-hop’s underground elite. Rap icon and core Living Legends member Murs put the festival together- which began in 2006- as a way to showcase the best & newest talent on the scene, as well as a collective of the best names in hip-hop today.
In addition to blistering sets from B-Real of Cypress Hill, Tech N9ne, LMNO and Living Legends, this year’s lineup featured a massive showing from the Rhymesayers family with Atmosphere, Eyedea & Abilities, Grouch & Eli, Brother Ali, and many more. Ali was the night’s runaway hit, delivering an unforgettable performance (as well as hype man duties for Atmosphere’s set) that serves as further proof that the grass is only going to get greener for the Minneapolis flowmaster in the future.
Another show highlight was Slaughterhouse, a new rap supergroup featuring some of the industry’s most kick-ass underdogs: Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9”, Joell Ortiz & Crooked I. Their set was a hell of a spectacle, with bizarre costumes and an intensity that easily matched the biggest names in the bill. The crowd wasn’t too familiar with the group, but they were received with head-bobbing enthusiasm. Those that did know what they were witnessing, however, were losing their shit.
Stay tuned to Antiquiet for interviews and kick-ass live footage from Paid Dues 2009!
